Charles Darwin, in his seminal work “The Origin of Species”, reflected that evolution embraced the concept of “survival of the fittest”.
Like many of the animal and plant species that Darwin studied, the business now known as Evolution Insurance has been through many variations in its history, before arriving at the organisation of today, best suited for the modern world of insurance services.
Evolution first started life in the 1980’s as ASA Insurance Services. From an office in Northampton they revolutionised the provision of motor insurance through a national network of car showrooms, enabling the customer to pick up a multi-year insurance policy at the same time as buying their new car. This idea quickly caught on and, helped by a simple to use, CD-driven, quotation system, well over 1,000 car sales outlets were using the scheme.
New owners Markerstudy Group acquired ASA at the end of 2002 and quickly identified the main weaknesses in the organisation. They included: Having “all their eggs in one basket” by only dealing through the motor trade, not having enough sophistication in their underwriting, and being top-heavy in terms of people and costs. Under new Chief Executive, Simon Clayton, these issues began to be addressed in 2003 by: building more selectivity into the underwriting model, restructuring the workforce and, crucially for the future, acquiring a small motor insurance broker which was moved into Northampton under a new name, ASA Broking Limited.
As 2004 unfolded it became clear that the majority of motor dealers were not going down the road of getting full FSA authorisation and that, to service customers properly, ASA’s focus would have to be on the broking side of the business. Accordingly ASA Broking Limited was boosted with new systems, dedicated staff, and access to some of the best value motor insurance products on the market, with all the leading British and European insurance companies.
This set-up enabled the broking team to become totally dominant by the end of 2004 and no new motor trade based business was taken after January 2005. To celebrate the new focus and save customer confusion, the trading name of Evolution Insurance was brought into play and the decks were cleared to give total concentration on providing the best broking service in the motor market.

This simply means that customers can fix the price of their motor insurance for anything up to 4 years irrespective of most circumstances in the meantime.
